Farewell wireless...

Some time ago I eventually got rid of those lousy wireless internet solutions and start using ADSL (Telekom, 256/64).

So, as user of almost all types of internet connections available in Lazarevac, I want to share some pro's and cons of each of them.

56k Modem (any provider)

Pro's:

• Highly reliable connection. If you wonder is some web service working as intended, this is good way to examine
• Public visible IP

Con's:

• Low speed, up to 6kB/s downstream, in best cases
• Non-permanent connection
• Occupies phone line

Wireless

Disclosure:
Some of my problems with this type of connection was caused with state-of-art PCI Wireless LAN Card Pheenet HWL-PCIG/TI (don't bother with searching official site for specifications, seems to Pheenet was abandoned this card due to many issues with this series... I almost forget to mention nonfunctional driver which caused many BSOD's on my PC). Although, guy's from computer shop "Код Базена" which sold this to me described card as "много добра, осетљива, само мора да се намести лепо...". Well, how sensitive must be my current card, mainstream Gigabyte GN-WP0/GS, which have 10dB/m better signal level on same equipment... (speaking of guy's mentioned above, they sold me homemade grid antenna 24dB (12-15dB is more realistic), 5m CFD200 and Pheenet card for CSD 10.000. What to say, great offer lol :) )

Wireless (AbsolutOK/ItsNet, 128/128 flat)

Pro's:

• Web interface only, no need to create anything on your PC
• Ok for gaming
• Couple of YEARS promotional period (finished some time ago) /salute
• Pleasant user support
• Creating account is free

Con's

• Poor QoS in crowd time
• No P2P (officially this is permitted, but effectively impossible)
• NAT
• Over aggregated link

Wireless (Veze.net, 64/64+128/128 flat)

Pro's

• One big LOL :)

Con's

• VPN connection system, connecting in modem-style
• Gaming unfriendly
• Creating account costing me EUR 20
• Horroric user support. "незнам, овде код мене све ради", "знаш ли ти колико је сати?", etc...
• Poor QoS
• NAT
• No P2P (officially this is permitted, but effectively impossible)
• Heavily over aggregated link

ADSL (Telekom 256/64 flat)

Pro's

• Good setup. 4-port router connected to PC with UTP, no drivers, VPN's, etc (web interface control)
• Creating account is free
• Public visible IP
• Full P2P (torrents, I come :) )
• Good QoS (at least for now)
• Separated up and down link

Con's

• Last-mile ping is 30-60mS (compared to 8-10mS on any wireless)
• Hmmm, there will be more items to add, just let some time to pass :)

Conclusion

My vote going to ADSL at the moment, but who knows what tomorrow brings...

Dispute this fact guys from Veze net somehow manages to offer worst QoS [connection-wise] of all others ISP's in Lazarevac (which is strongest competition on earth); This is they real achievement :)

I am online again, eventually

After 20 long days wasted in attempts to finish my geodesy assignment project, I went back.

I was pleasantly surprised when I checked Google analytics for visit statistics of this site so I will try to improve this blog as much as possible. Fact that 5-10 people per day visit this page is peculiar enough that I start to doubt in accuracy of Google's counter. (Though, maybe this is just bunch of geeks constantly refreshing page in web browser ;) )

PE Info is almost finished

Just as title says, project is nearly done.

Few things like help content, crash reporting tool and some visual improvements is remained to be coded, though.
As soon as all work will finished I will upload whole project [over 4.000 lines of code :) ] to web for public access. I am using opportunity to encourage you to share some of your source code [e.g. snippets, some how-to projects etc] because then other people can audit your code and maybe give you some valuable advice.

Just for the record, I am not OSS freak or GPL zealot [like some people, khm...], actually I believe that proprietary software is way to go.

ISP's mockery upon us

Take look at this column published in Svet Kompjutera for march 2007.

I couldn't agree more with his author Miodrag Kuzmanović in matters of ISP issues in Serbia.
While in civilized world users complains on his Gbps links chairman of Telekom Serbia in one of his speaks says [paraphrase]:

"Brzina od 768Kbps je sasvim dovoljna da omoguci uzivanje u svim sadrzajima koje internet nudi. Nase trziste nema poterebe za vecim brzinama. Vise vam moze biti potrebno jedino ako preko interneta gledate TV..."

Shamefully...

He forgot to mention QoS provided by ISP's which result with connection resets [which effectively interrupt any MMOG expirience], massive lag etc... Which remembered me; here is couple of screen shots captured during my World of Warcraft sessions:


Notice that red latency indicator in middle bottom of the screen [btw red means 600+ ms latency]


Here we have respond for my apologize to raid leader via in-game letter. Our raid attempted to kill Teremus the Devourer when I disconnected... Raid was wiped because I was main tank... Annoying, isn't it.

People I was played with used teamspeak, download movies, sharing his connection with other computers etc. during game sessions and still have 50-80 ms lag in game. I think that you get a picture...

Our pitiful government obviously didn't care, they saying "We will imprison general Mladich as soon as possible ... blah..blah..." Big deal, nobody cares except them.
How about xGbps fiber optic to every home instead of commercials for DS Mr.President. This is cost only 50.000 $/Km which is nothing for serious country...

Aaarrghh, i am really pissed off, sorry about this :)

Importance of backup

Heh, all of us hate those boring daily backups. But backup can save our work in case of hardware failure or just accidentally deletion.

So I decide to write simple .CMD script in order to automate backup process. This script backup one or more target folders to compressed file Backup [dd.mmm.yyyy].rar on custom location (e.g. Backup [12.06.2002].rar).

Just download archive from link below, put all files from archive in one folder and customize script.

Open .cmd file in your text editor and replace values in brackets with your own paths as described in script comments. I also provided sample script which back up contents of your desktop to archive in root of C drive to show you how script should look like. My upload also contains cmdline utility rar.exe in case that you don't have winrar installed on your system.

Damn rainy weather...

Today I skipped my training because of this awful gloomy weather.
In my misery I felt just as person which was described by Slađa Lučić when she tell me and my friend Dima " To meni izgleda kao samo salo" pointing at our arms... Following this method of workout I will reach 12% BF ...lets see... in 2056, maybe.

You maybe heard about resurrection of Dima's wiki page on wiki system established on free hosting [supported by Google text adds on left side, so not big deal though] where his wiki have his own sub domain and independent unmoderated content.
If you wish to contribute project just register and post. You can create articles which isn't related to Dima's page, at last we have own wiki engine on our service, so be creative :)

Things just going on...

As you know, work on my new applications is in progress.
After many UI changes i am still pretty disappointed with look of the form. But main parts of program working like a charm. Engine seems to be almost endless scalable, even despite many recursive system calls during dependency analyze. I am pleasantly surprised with code solidity, which means no fatal errors during testing so far.

Here you can take a look to current UI and take a picture about final functionality [though, i planned to add heuristic dependency search, because I have finished components to do this and current optimization for fast executing will allow me to add this module without killing performances, even on older boxes]

So, after long digression... behold :)



This application will be released as freeware so those Linux zealots can be content :p

As you know project "Dima's Wiki" is over. Some people reported page to admin team and they deleted all content and prevented page from re-creation...
I want to apologize to all people who participate in this project against their will (eg. trough published pictures, videos etc...)

Power of VB

I am tired of comments about VB which can be heard from people programming in so called low level programing languages such as asm and C.
They said that VB is:

• Runtime dependent
• Often OCX or other library dependent
• Pointer agnostic
• Unsafe typed
• Language with non API compatible types
• In version 6 even no OOP language
  
• Language with worst syntax
• Windows only
  
• ...etc...

All of this points are true, unfortunately.

But, maybe you don't want to begin your source with ".486" or to use "lpcwstrLpsz" as variable declaration. Or maybe you wish simple plain vanilla .exe and not some .jar or .pl or something...
In that case you can try VB and maybe be surprised :)

Some time ago I began to write PE analyzer [you maybe saw my version dependency checker released in process of developing full featured PE analyze engine] in order to understand how things works under the hood. As you can see here this is full featured class which can provide various info about any PE file. I am ready to write final application which should be finished for several days [what man can do to avoid "projektovanje" :) ]. Until that enjoy in feature list :)

Mučite se sa dial-upom? Niste zadovoljni brzinom ADSL-a koju nude domaći provajderi? Mislite da je Internet skupa igračka? E pa, evo vam još materijala za nerviranje.

Prema podacima japanskog Ministarstva za unutrašnje poslove i komunikacije tamošnji korisnici su oberučke prihvatili servise bazirane na korišćenju optičkih vlakana. Čak četvrtina od 25 miliona korisnika broadband pristupa priključeno je na optičke konekcije. Konkurencija na tržištu Internet provajdera je izuzetno žestoka, pa se na svakog novog korisnika gleda kao „na malo vode na dlanu”.

Uvođenje optičke konekcije se izvodi za maksimalno dve nedelje, a vrlo često prvih meseci se usluge uopšte ne naplaćuju. Pri tome su cene smešne, da smešnije ne mogu biti.

Tako Japanci mogu od operatera fiksne telefonije NTT East Corp. da dobiju takozvani Hyper Family paket po mesečnoj tarifi od 5.200 jena (uključeno i rentiranje opreme), što iznosi nešto malo više od 33 evra, odnosno oko 2.600 dinara.

A za tu cenu pretplatnik dobija priključak na optički link brzine 1 Gbs, dok su pojedini priključci unutar stana ili kuce podešeni na brzinu od 100 Mbs (što važi i za upload i za download). Tako sve više Japanaca napušta ADSL kod kojeg maksimalna brzina dostiže cifru od „samo” 47 Mbs, i to po ceni od 1.000 jena (oko 6,5 evra).
